The Process of Constructing Wicker Furniture

Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Wicker Furnitures

You may be curious about how such beautiful and strong furniture can be created from something as plain looking as rattan. Wicker furniture is created from a material we know as rattan. The weaving process of rattan is known as wicker. Hence, the name “wicker furniture”. Often, the terms “wicker furniture” and “rattan furniture” are used interchangeably. Although both terms mean different things, they both refer to the same of furniture.

The raw materials used to create wicker furniture, the rattan pole, is thick and strong. At first glance, hardly anyone would think of using this to create furniture. That is because rattan poles are rather thick by nature. And weaving is a process that is hardly used on thick materials.

But wicker furniture manufacturers have been using an innovative process to transform rattan poles into strips that are thin enough for weaving. They start by using a machine to cut the interior of the rattan pole, splitting it into many smaller pieces, which are now suitable for weaving. This is not all.

Rattan pole also happens to be very tough. But they become more flexible when under high temperature. So before weaving, rattan materials are placed in a steam box. This helps to soften the materials, making them ready to be bent to fit the shape of a jig. The jig is a model used to determine the exact shape and size of the furniture. Different types of jigs produce many different forms of wicker furniture. Manufacturers use jigs to make sure that similar furniture models are created with great consistency. So when placing orders based on samples, customers can expect receiving a highly similar piece of wicker furniture. When the rattan cools, it will retain the shape of the jig.

The joints are then wrapped with strong materials like wicker peel or leather straps for enhanced durability.

At this stage, the wicker furniture is almost finished. It has taken on its final shape. But the surface remains rough. Splits are commonly found on the surface due to the earlier process, where machine is used to cut up the interior. So great care is taken to sand the surface of the wicker furniture to give it a smooth surface. In addition, latex and alcohol base stains are used to give the furniture a more polished appearance.

As you can probably tell, great care must be taken to create a piece of high quality wicker furniture. In the manufacturing process, not everything can be done by machines. Many steps require human intervention to ensure that the process goes smoothly. In many aspects, great skills are required. This is especially so in the final stages, where the finishing touches are applied.

This final step is accomplished entirely by human hands, and a lot of experience is required for the job to be done well. It is also what separates the high quality wicker furniture from the moderate ones. The higher quality wicker furniture tend to have a highly polished look, and splits and discolorations are blended nicely during the finishing touches.

Understanding the construction process gives you an inkling on how to choose the best wicker furniture for yourself.

Choose From a Wide Range of Wicker Furniture

Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Wicker Furnitures

When you’re considering wooden furniture, you probably have more than a few requirements. You may, perhaps, want a something durable and long lasting that will maintain its value and prove to be a great investment. You may also want something lightweight, which can be easily moved to rearrange or redecorate. If these sound like what you’re looking for, you’re probably going to be best suited shopping for wicker furniture.

While wicker refers to a method of wooden furniture manufacturing, rather than a specific material, it is usually associated with woods such as rattan, bamboo or willow. It is a favorite of those seeking a light, airy and versatile piece that can be modified to fit their lifestyle and décor as it changes.

The best types of wicker furniture are made from natural products, such as reeds or rattan. These types of wicker are also called cane furniture as they are woven from cane like woods. Because of the unique, intricate weaving process, the natural wicker pieces are exceptionally strong, and a finishing coat provides excellent protection from moisture damage. The process also allows for a wide range of furniture styles and types.

The thought of wicker may make you think of an outdoor setting, like a screened porch or open patio. While wicker, like any piece of wooden furniture, should never be left exposed to the elements for an extended period of time, patio decors are probably the most popular place for these pieces. Patio tables, chairs, chaise lounges and tables can all be crafted in wicker, and with proper care can be used for years to come.

Many indoor styles, from Victorian to a green environmental, utilize simple wicker furniture to provide an earthy feel. Environmental decors are best served by all-natural wicker to maximize natural beauty and minimize ecological impact.

When shopping for wicker furniture, it’s important to remember the different types available. Bamboo wicker is exceptionally sturdy and beautiful. It is less pliable that other wicker materials, but will be much more durable for a longer period of time. Rattan is similar to bamboo, but since it is a snaking vine rather than a straight growing reed, rattan is much more pliable. This pliability makes it better suited for intricate weaving, and it is nearly as durable as bamboo. Similarly, other vines and willow branches, a vine-like tree branch, provide pliability and strength.

Synthetic fibres have gained much popularity since they hit the market. Since they are easier to manufacture, color and weave than natural fibers, they provide a cost effective alternative. They are, typically, just as durable and much more water resistant. However, they don’t provide the same ecologically sound benefits of quick growing plants like rattan and bamboo, and cannot be considered true wooden furniture.

If the weave ever cracks up or splits, then you can take resort to so many kinds of stains, paints, glosses or furniture color and other touch up items to maintain the uniformity of the color.

After certain time, the weave may show unraveling. In this case, you can get repaired by redoing the weave. But get sufficient information on pricing for repairing the weave, because it may be less expensive to buy new furniture than redoing the sunroom wicker furniture.

Buying Fabric For Your Wicker Furniture

Posted on Thursday, July 30, 2009 in Wicker Furnitures

When you are planning to buy cushions and other material for the wicker sunroom furniture, you should keep some of the most important things in your mind. You should never compromise on the quality of the fabric because you can plan to use them for a longer period. It should also be understood that when you check the price list of wicker furniture, it rarely include the cushions that are displayed with the furniture. You should order the type of cushions and fabric of your choice and if you don’t feel good for the choices that you see then ask for different fabric for the cushions. You can find the fabric of your choice if you have purchased the standard size furniture.

If not then you can have difficulty in finding the best cushions and fabric for you. To maintain the furniture you should also consider some kind of stain guard which can protect your fabric. Protecting the fabric is a good idea because some times you can plan to entertain in your sunroom and if you have no protection measures that time then your fabric can be damaged. Having meals and great deal of traffic in your sunroom can also damage your unprotected fabric. Fabric guard is the best protector of your fabric because it can easily clean any spills and keep your fabric new for longer periods.

Maintaining the wicker furniture is very much easy. There are many benefits of wicker furniture; one of them is that it doesn’t require a lot of maintenance to look in good condition. Even then it is very important to perform regular dusting because the weave can attract the dust. Every surface in your sunroom requires cleaning so wicker furniture should also be kept cleaned but a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth should be used. A cleaner which has a narrow pointed attachment can help you to easily clean up your fabric and furniture.

The wicker comes in a wide range of colors. It can also be painted if you don’t like the kind of colors painted on it. But if the wicker is finished with varnish it will be difficult to paint it. All you have to do is to apply primer on the surface of the wicker then only you can apply color so that it can be adhered. Smoothing the wicker surface is possible but if you are doing it ruthlessly it will be for the wicker itself. Harshness can damage the reeds and affect the integrity and strength of the wicker.

If you ever experience the cracking or the splitting of the weave, you should apply stains, paints, furniture color or glosses to keep the color safe. These products can make your products keep their color uniform. As the times passes on it is possible that the weave gets unraveled. It is easy to repair the weave by getting it redone. This process is easy but it can cost you more than the cost of replacing the furniture.
