Home Office Furniture – Shopping Smart

Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Office Furnitures

If you have started your own in-home business, one of the purchases you will eventually have to make is that of your home office furniture. Unless you already have an established client base, and know your business will be a money maker, you probably do not want to spend a huge amount.

On the other hand, if your business requires your clients and prospective clients to come to your office, you want your home office furniture, if not the best available, to be at least presentable. And your choice of home office furniture will also depend to a large extent on the kind of home business you have. If you are a free-lance writer, for instance, you may need nothing more elaborate than a quality computer desk/workstation and comfortable office chair.

Should you have a large client base and do a lot of paperwork, however, you’ll want filing cabinets for storage, as well as your computer area setup. If that be the case, you would be wise to get as much storage capacity as you need in one shopping trip; having to buy mismatched pieces as you go will destroy the professional look of your office.

Buying Smart

Discount and close-out furniture outlets are terrific places to shop for inexpensive home office furniture; many of them have clearance rooms with discontinued items and floor models reduced as much as 80%. Some office supply stores have periodic “scratch-and-dent” sales to move damaged or returned items. As long as the damage is not significant, and especially, as in the case of adjustable chairs, does not affect the furniture’s operation, you can find some excellent buys.

Keep It Real

Just remember to keep it real when you are shopping for home office furniture – a magnificent $3000 desk discounted to $1000, even if it is the best desk in the entire world, is not worth the money if you can’t get it through your office door. Know what your office will hold, and don’t buy a single stick of furniture more than that.

Maybe Office Furniture Does Make the Man

Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Office Furnitures

Some people say that the clothes make the man, but I think in the corporate world that the office furniture makes the man or woman for that matter. If you are in the mail room you are lucky if you get a desk and maybe a beat up chair. If you are in middle management then you usually get your own office and some marginally nice office furniture. If you are in upper management you usually have the corner office with all of the nicest office furniture that money can buy. So does your position get you the nice office furniture, or does your office furniture help you move into a better position? I am only bringing up this point because many people say that you should dress for success. If you dress nice then you have a better chance of moving up in corporate America. Let us think about this a little bit.

If you have a chance to choose what type of office furniture you will get for your office, then you should definitely jump at the chance. If you are in the middle management and your office looks as nice as most of the people in upper management, then the next thing you know you might become part of upper management. One of the things that are true about human nature is that people like to be around other people like themselves. If you dress like upper management, act like upper management, have office furniture like upper management, then there will be a better chance of you being promoted to upper management. I know that this sounds absurd, but if you think about it this theory actually makes some sense. The next time you are picking out office furniture for your office you should take some time to look at your bosses’ office furniture and try to purchase furniture similar to what they have in their office. If you pay attention to this fact, then you just might get that promotion you have being waiting for.

Office Furniture Workstations

Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Office Furnitures

If you’re considering some office furniture workstations for your office environment then there are a few things that you will need to consider before investing any time or money. The three major factors you will need to address are; the space that you have, the functions for which the furniture is intended and the image you wish to portray with you new office design. After addressing these three factors you will be better informed to make wise and appropriate choices.

The first consideration is the space that you have and the amount of workstations that you plan to fit into the area. A floor plan of the area will help you to determine how many workstations you can comfortably fit into the space. On your floor plan don’t forget to include pillars, emergency exits and any other permanent fixtures that may affect the placement of workstations. Be sure to take this with you when meeting with suppliers or designers. Sometimes when you have to fit a large number of workstations into a less than ideal space, a floor plan can help you and your designers come up with clever utilisation of space.

When designing the use of space you need to also take into consideration the intended use of the workstations. At a workstation level you need to consider the size of the work area, any computer and accessories, credenzas and filing. Not all desks will be the same, some may have special requirements for such things as extra flat working space, display space or extra filing. Consider whether you need private work spaces or low partitions and if you need private offices or meeting rooms. Also, be sure to consult your workforce to find out what their needs are, they will be using this space everyday.

Budget is often a limiting factor for many businesses but well designed office furniture workstations need not be too expensive. But be mindful of the image you portray to customers, business partners and suppliers who may enter you’re workspace. Does your office environment look professional & modern? Have you used sustainable products that reflect your companies commitment to the environment? Have you used local suppliers, reinforcing your support for the community. These factors may not directly influence the comfort or productivity of your workforce, but you can use this fit-out as an opportunity to display your business ethic to everyone you have business dealings with.

Utilising the space you have, designing office furniture workstations that fit their intended use and using the opportunity to portray the right image are all factors you should be considering before fitting out your office environment; this will ensure that you have a happy and comfortable work force that have the space and equipment they need to do their job properly.

The Process of Constructing Wicker Furniture

Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Wicker Furnitures

You may be curious about how such beautiful and strong furniture can be created from something as plain looking as rattan. Wicker furniture is created from a material we know as rattan. The weaving process of rattan is known as wicker. Hence, the name “wicker furniture”. Often, the terms “wicker furniture” and “rattan furniture” are used interchangeably. Although both terms mean different things, they both refer to the same of furniture.

The raw materials used to create wicker furniture, the rattan pole, is thick and strong. At first glance, hardly anyone would think of using this to create furniture. That is because rattan poles are rather thick by nature. And weaving is a process that is hardly used on thick materials.

But wicker furniture manufacturers have been using an innovative process to transform rattan poles into strips that are thin enough for weaving. They start by using a machine to cut the interior of the rattan pole, splitting it into many smaller pieces, which are now suitable for weaving. This is not all.

Rattan pole also happens to be very tough. But they become more flexible when under high temperature. So before weaving, rattan materials are placed in a steam box. This helps to soften the materials, making them ready to be bent to fit the shape of a jig. The jig is a model used to determine the exact shape and size of the furniture. Different types of jigs produce many different forms of wicker furniture. Manufacturers use jigs to make sure that similar furniture models are created with great consistency. So when placing orders based on samples, customers can expect receiving a highly similar piece of wicker furniture. When the rattan cools, it will retain the shape of the jig.

The joints are then wrapped with strong materials like wicker peel or leather straps for enhanced durability.

At this stage, the wicker furniture is almost finished. It has taken on its final shape. But the surface remains rough. Splits are commonly found on the surface due to the earlier process, where machine is used to cut up the interior. So great care is taken to sand the surface of the wicker furniture to give it a smooth surface. In addition, latex and alcohol base stains are used to give the furniture a more polished appearance.

As you can probably tell, great care must be taken to create a piece of high quality wicker furniture. In the manufacturing process, not everything can be done by machines. Many steps require human intervention to ensure that the process goes smoothly. In many aspects, great skills are required. This is especially so in the final stages, where the finishing touches are applied.

This final step is accomplished entirely by human hands, and a lot of experience is required for the job to be done well. It is also what separates the high quality wicker furniture from the moderate ones. The higher quality wicker furniture tend to have a highly polished look, and splits and discolorations are blended nicely during the finishing touches.

Understanding the construction process gives you an inkling on how to choose the best wicker furniture for yourself.

Rattan Furniture – Furnishing

Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Rattan Furnitures

So you’re all excited about getting new outside furniture for your patio area! Depending on the climate in your area and your budget, there are many styles and materials from which you can choose.

Rattan furniture is readily available and comes in a wide variety of styles and colors. One luxurious set in chocolate brown or a banana shade includes four beautiful chairs with cushions and a matching round table. Some sets include foot stools that can also be used for storing a blanket for a cool evening on the patio.

Sets are also available that include loveseats and sofas. Any furniture pieces that you can buy in other materials are also made in rattan. Whether you are in the market for a hall tree, filing cabinet, or a futon for your college student, you will be thrilled to know you can buy your special item made of rattan.

Obviously, rattan furniture will require more maintenance than furniture made out of metal or wood. If your patio area is not enclosed, there could be some concern about damage from the outside elements. Some rattan furniture is made of resin and will withstand the outdoors better than handmade natural rattan.

There are special products that are used to keep your rattan furniture looking as good as new throughout the years. Although good quality rattan furniture is very strong, some natural rattan furniture may not be able to handle the weight of two large adults.

When considering purchasing rattan furniture for your patio, you will want to have a place to store it during cold months. It probably wouldn’t stand up to extremely cold temperatures or snowy weather. Humidity is very hard on rattan furniture as well as rainy climates.

If you have dogs that have access to your patio, rattan furniture might not be your best choice. Obviously, it could easily be damaged by a pup who decided to chew on it. It would be a shame to have your beautiful rattan furniture ruined after you made the financial investment. Unfortunately, even cats can scratch up rattan furniture which would spoil its appearance.

Some specialty furniture stores that carry rattan items can special order your choices but their furniture could cost you well into the thousands of dollars. On the other end of the financial spectrum, there are discount furniture stores that sell rattan furniture at relatively low prices. You will want to check out the furniture for differences in quality.

Whether you are buying this furniture for your living room, bedroom, dining room, or patio, your family and friends will be impressed with your choice. Whatever color scheme you have in your home, there is a shade of rattan furniture that will complement your preferences.

Rattan furniture is available in traditional shades similar to colors used to stain wooden floors and patio decks. You can find this furniture in a rich dark brown to black color or as light as beige to white. Some companies even carry rattan in shades of pink, blue, or red.

Nothing can compare with the island atmosphere you can create with your exquisite rattan furniture. You and your loved ones will have many hours of enjoyment while relaxing on your rattan furniture whether it is in your home or out in your backyard patio.

Cane or Rattan Furniture for your home and garden

Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Rattan Furnitures

Rattan or wicker furniture is made from cane which is a raw material that comes from the stems of large rattans, which are climbing palms found native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australasia. Because cane is a raw material it is tough and durable which makes it an ideal material for indoor and outdoor furniture. The material is also very versatile which means manufacturers can now modify designs to keep it right up today with today’s designs and styles. More and more people are realising the benefits of having cane furniture in their homes and gardens.

The reason cane furniture is ideal for gardens and conservatories is because unlike wood it will not rot or become damaged. It is an ideal material for any environment at any time of the year. If like most people you keep plants in your conservatory then you will find the air will be moist. This would be detrimental on any wood furniture which makes cane or rattan furniture most people’s first choice when it comes to furnishings. Cane will not rot or rust, it is water resistant which means it will last in great condition for years to come.

The beauty of cane furniture is that it offers a timeless look that will last you a very long time. It looks beautiful in conservatories but also not out of place in the living room or any other room of the house. Some of the styles and designs are very contemporary which makes it fit into today’s modern living. Cane is also ideal for outdoor living and can be found in gardens all around the world.

So how do they make it? Well, once the palm is harvested it is then boiled which removes the sap from the bark. This removal of the sap allows the material to have the flexibility properties which makes it easy to mould into various shapes. Once this process is completed the material is then split into thin strips. These strips are then intertwined to make the furniture. Generally the frames of the furniture are made from much larger canes. This whole process is very time consuming and costly which is why quality cane furniture isn’t cheap. However, you are buying furniture that is very easy to clean, will last for years and years, will need very little attention to keep it preserved, with that in mind the cost isn’t that expensive.

Another important aspect which shouldn’t be forgotten is that cane furniture is completely environmentally friendly due to it being made completely naturally without the use any chemicals or wood treatment. This is another hit with consumers as we are all living in a world where environmental products are in the foremost of everyone’s minds.

Natural and Synthetic Rattan Furniture

Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Rattan Furnitures

Have you sometimes wished that your furniture was a little more flexible and resilient? Maybe you’re looking for something sturdy, yet natural-looking for your outdoor patio or garden. Or perhaps you’d like to redecorate your house in an Eastern motif. Whatever your reason, rattan furniture could be a great addition to your home.

Rattan is a popular material for furniture. That’s because it’s easy to weave and shape into various styles. It’s also a very versatile material. It can be used to create wicker, or stained and painted like regular wood furniture. It’s easy to achieve rounded lines with rattan that would require lots of cutting and sanding with other woods.

Rattan furniture is both sturdy and flexible. It is often found on enclosed porches where they can provide a breezy atmosphere without direct exposure to the elements. Synthetic rattan is even sturdier and will stand up to sunlight and rain. Some naturalists like rattan because it blends in with nature. Since the material is able to be painted it is available in many shades and hues. White synthetic rattan furniture is wonderful for outdoor entertaining in the summer. Dark rattan is more somber, but looks especially fetching next to spicy red, gold, and orange Indian fabrics. Natural rattan can be paired with green accents or floral patterns to bring the look of the outdoors inside.

All types of rattan chairs can be kept in tip top shape with routine cleaning. To clean the rattan without soaking it, whip up some suds using a little dish detergent and water. Skim off the bubbles and rub them over the rattan using a clean cloth. This provides quick routine cleaning without getting the furniture wet. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth, or allow to air dry. You can repeat this cleaning every two to four weeks as needed to maintain the furniture.

Boiled linseed oil and lemon oil work wonders as moisturizing agents. They can be gently rubbed into the rattan to prevent cracking and splitting. Rattan is naturally resistant to such damage, but dry climates and rough floors can cause problems. Keep your rattan furniture oiled for maximum protection.

If your rattan furniture has already suffered from splitting, a few easy steps will have it looking like new in just a day. When you first notice a split, apply some furniture glue to it. Then use tape to bind the pieces tight and hold them in place until the glue dries completely. This technique can also be used to repair rattan wrappings that have come loose.

If your rattan furniture starts to look dusty, use a soft feather duster to whisk away loose particles. A clean cloth can be used for general dusting. For stubborn dirt, use a soft toothbrush or small furniture brush to get into the crevices of the material.

Always store your natural rattan furniture indoors, or keep it covered with weather-proof vinyl if you need to store it outside. Synthetic rattan is durable and will withstand the weather more easily. With these care and cleaning tips, you’ll ensure that your rattan furniture – natural or synthetic – will be enjoyed for many years to come.
