Contemporary Coffee Tables – A Fresh Perspective on Glass

Posted on Thursday, July 30, 2009 in Home Furnitures

Some people seem to have a hard time understanding the true need or relevance of luxurious contemporary coffee tables. This is actually an odd development because coffee tables have been around for centuries and they are a standard piece of furniture in most Western homes. Typically placed in front of a couch or the primary seating area in the living room, the coffee table is a central feature that helps to unify the space. However, as the pace of both society and our lives have quickened in recent generations, the traditional use of the coffee table may have faded from relevance.

Another reason why some of us may doubt the need for a coffee table is because of the style and design of our homes. Contemporary homes tend to feature simple yet functional designs and complementing furniture.

A traditional coffee table made from fine hardwoods such as oak or teak simply seem out of place in modern homes but this does not mean that a table is not needed in the principle seating area of the living room. Relevant yet beautiful contemporary coffee tables are available that will positively complete the living room while making you the envy of friends and family alike—especially those tables made with glass tops!

The first glass coffee tables would now be considered traditional pieces as they were made in the early 1900’s by the Gambaro brothers. Featuring Venetian crystal, these beautiful coffee tables were only available to the elite as they were very expensive and difficult to make. However, thanks to innovations in the manufacturing process and a wider availability of materials, glass contemporary coffee tables are now reasonably priced and affordable to all.

A glass top perfectly suits contemporary decor as it is both simple yet functional—at least if you make sure to buy one that is at least ¼ inch thick!! While you may be able to find coffee tables with a glass top that is thinner—they should be avoided as they really are an accident waiting to happen!

Beautiful contemporary coffee tables featuring glass tops are the perfect complements to your modern décor and will provide you with years of satisfaction and reliable use. Just be sure to choose a base that complements the other furnishings in the decor so that the space is unified and complete.

Pub Tables – A Class to an Otherwise Undefined Space

Posted on Thursday, July 30, 2009 in Home Furnitures

Many of us have them but we have no idea what they are or what to do with them-undefined spaces! In particular, the kitchen is one of those rooms in modern interior design schemes that has seemed to grow larger and larger in building plans. Architects have indeed added a great deal of space to the kitchen area but have often come up short when trying to assign additional functions to this added area. Stylish pub tables may be one possible solution for these “undefined spaces” and may provide you with a viable option when it comes to filling these areas with something useful and beautiful.

In a more traditional kitchen, perhaps one built at the end of the 19th century, there were areas known as “breakfast nooks”. Certainly nothing fancy, these little spaces may have included a couple of built-in benches and a little table next to a window in one corner of the kitchen. These little nooks were not part of the “kitchen proper” as they tended to be located off to the side and almost in a little area all to themselves.

Modern kitchens still have these out-of-the-way places in the kitchen and they can be filled with lavish pub tables. Just as their name implies, these unique tables are often found in taverns or the bar area in many popular restaurants.

A classic pub table is often much higher than a traditional dining table and tends to have a very small top. You need to buy special chairs for these unusually high tables or you will find yourself reaching upwards when trying to get your drink! However, the elevated height of magnificent pub tables and use of special chairs helps to create a unique space that is separate from the kitchen aesthetically but still connected in function and proximity.

So, don’t let that bare space in your kitchen remain undecorated for another year! Start surfing the web today and compare prices on elegant pub tables and their accompanying chairs. Even if you could find a traditional furniture retailer selling these unique tables, they would most likely offer fewer choices and higher prices when compared to online merchants who have lower overhead and an unlimited amount of display space. You are sure to find the perfect pub table for your otherwise undefined space and maybe even create a little sanctuary within your home to just sit back and enjoy a cup of tea once in a while!

Antique Chairs

Posted on Thursday, July 30, 2009 in Antique Furnitures

We should start by defining antique. Antique can be used to mean something very old or old fashioned. There are people who collect old things because they like it and others because they are valuable. Antique chairs are very much like this. They are ancient but very beautiful to look at. They were made with a lot of creativity and above all with originality.

Chairs are used in most homes for relaxing. After a hard days work, there is nothing like lying back on a comfortable seat and enjoying a good nap or relaxing. This means that whatever you buy should be very comfortable. Let it not be that it is just a good antique chair to look at, but also a place where you can feel at ease.

In this day and age, antique chairs can either be originally old fashioned or can be modern, but they are made to look old. The only way to tell the difference is that the original old ones are very expensive because appreciating in value over the years. The ones made to look old are much more affordable. The normal material used to make them is normally wood. They are made to look so much like the old original chairs that sometimes telling the difference is almost impossible.

Antique chairs can be put in just about any room in the house, not necessarily in the living room area. They are so stylish and graceful. They are used to almost show a sense of wealth to the owner of the home. This is because for the better part, people use them for decorative purposes.

Rattan Furniture – Ideal for Indoor and Outdoor Locations

Posted on Thursday, July 30, 2009 in Rattan Furnitures

Shopping for new home furniture can be a painstaking process. You may ask yourself over and over what will look best in each particular room, and question how each piece will integrate with your existing d?r. Fortunately, there is a particular style of furniture that is appropriate for every room of your home, allowing for seamless integration and endless decorating options.

Wicker is a style of furniture construction that involves tightly weaving pieces of wood or reed. The most common, and long lasting, type of wicker is made of rattan. This tropical vine is both fast growing and sustainable, making it an excellent choice for both financial and environmental reasons. To add to its appeal, it has a natural shine and beauty that rivals even the finest of hard woods.

Wicker rattan is an excellent choice for nearly any room of your home, including the outdoors. Because the vine is farmed in a tropical environment, it can withstand weather that would cause most hardwood to crack or split. Rattan does not warp or swell due to moisture like other woods, and it does not splinter from overuse.

The weather resistant nature of rattan has given it a name as the ideal outdoor furniture material. Its strong nature also lends itself to the perfect indoor item. Just as it won’t succumb to rain or sun, it will stand up to rowdy children, partying adults and years of light use. Because it is so lightweight, it can be easily moved from room to room, to accommodate last minute guests or a spur of the moment redecorating idea.

You may worry about purchasing wicker rattan furniture if you have children, but the durable furniture is the perfect candidate for curious little ones. From back porches to living rooms, wicker rattan can be a worry easing furniture choice that won’t crack from a child’s abuse or leave splinters in little fingers. Cozy couches and traditional rocking chairs, two favorites of small children, are appropriate for most any room, but most notably casual spaces like living rooms and recreation rooms.

If you frequently entertain, rattan is one of the simplest ways to create an elegant, modern look without excessive costs. Rattan furniture can easily be dressed up with colorful cushions or even a fresh coat of paint. By decorating your entertaining rooms with all rattan furniture, your guests will see a seamless transition even with varying colors and styles. A comfortable love seat set in a parlor will match well with a tasteful table and chairs in a conservatory, while giving your guests plenty of room to relax and enjoy themselves.

Rattan’s water resistance makes it the perfect mate for your poolside. As an added benefit, since most pools are only in use for a few months each year, rattan pieces can do double duty for the rest of the year on patios or 3 seasons rooms.

These are just a few of the many ways you could use wicker rattan, and with luck you’ll find a way to integrate this versatile, environmentally friendly furniture into your home’s d?

Rattan and Wicker Furniture – What’s The Difference?

Posted on Thursday, July 30, 2009 in Rattan Furnitures, Wicker Furnitures

Have you ever wondered what the difference between rattan furniture and wicker furniture is? If you have, I can explain the differences and some of the common misconceptions about these wonderful natural furnishings.

Many people incorrectly believe that rattan and wicker are one in the same. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, they aren’t even in the same category. Let’s take a look at how these two popular, yet very different, arts come together to provide a unique, elegant atmosphere in the home.

First let’s get some facts about rattan. Rattan is a vine that grows in the tropical forests of the Far East. Usually, it grows in a pole shape with a diameter of about 1-3 inches. Rattan can grow up to hundreds of feet in length. It is also one of nature’s strongest woods. Rattan cane has a solid core, unlike bamboo pole, making it much more durable and harder to break. Rattan will not warp and is ideal for making furniture. After being cut into smaller sections, the canes are then molded into shape to form the frames for various furniture items. Peel, the outer skin of the rattan pole, is traditionally used to wrap the furniture joints.

Wicker, on the other hand, refers to items made from any number of natural materials, including rattan core, reed, rush, and willow. When wet, these natural materials are pliable enough to be woven, creating the unique wicker-weaved designs we see in wicker furniture. In fact, most rattan furniture is created with wicker weaved on top of the rattan core frame. Rattan and wicker are wonderful natural products, each piece having its own unique set of qualities. No two pieces are ever completely the same.

Many people love the aesthetic qualities of this furniture. A great room in your home furnished with rattan can feel like a retreat to a secluded island resort after a long day at the office. Who wouldn’t want to come home to that? Another common misconception is that wicker and rattan furniture is strictly for outdoor or patio use. Definitely not so. Rattan furniture comes in living room sets, dining room sets, bedrooms, office furniture and much more.

Many times it is hard to find these types of furnishings locally. And, often, even if you can find them, it is usually a pretty limited selection of items. It’s easy to find these great natural furnishings online. Just search the web and you will find great websites that offer authentic rattan and wicker furniture. Happy hunting!

Modern Living Room

Posted on Monday, July 27, 2009 in Home Furnitures

So, are you ready for the Modern Living Room experience? Ready to live with modern style furniture but do not know where to start? Let’s start.

What I would recommend you is to first choose the right modern wall unit, TV stand or entertainment center for your living room because your sofa position and measurements will very much depend of the placement of your TV entertainment center, TV stand, or the complete wall unit. You can, of course, choose to just get a modern TV stand but I strongly recommend you to get a complete wall unit. This could be the most creative and unique furniture piece in your living room, the piece that will give your living style not only modern but absolutely unique look. These days, with so many options and choices of modern wall units out there it all depends only on your creativity to build your own style from what furniture manufacturers are offering you.

Modern sofas, modern sectional sofas, dinette area tables – all of these units you see in stores usually look somewhat alike to what your neighbors have. But modern wall unit gives you an opportunity to create something really eye catching, nice, unique and futuristic piece of modern furniture. And to make that happen, let me offer some helpful hints that always work for me:

A wall unit is usually what you see first when enter a living room so work hard on it. First, you really need to start with choosing the right size – yes, it does matter here. There is a very simple rule for the wall unit I use: “90-60-90″, or I would say “90-60-45-90″ J. What it means is that, usually, wall units geometrically come in standard sizes like 90, 60 and 45 cm. Sometimes you will find 120 and 100 cm units existing but those usually are TV bases or base units. Depth typically does not exceed 15-17″ for wall mounted units or storage units and 20-24″ for base units. Trust me, if you’ve done this part of your homework correctly, it will serve you right.

These days, plenty of colors and finishes are used for modern wall units. Lacquer, wood veneer…. I especially like black / white, black / red lacquered color combinations; however, even though white color looks nice, be very careful with it. The color of your wall might spoil the effect (means if your wall is painted in white, beige or of white then white wall unit will blend in and you won’t have that contrast effect you’ve been looking for).

Please…. Do not try to make your wall unit spacey and useful at the same time…. It won’t work… there are lots of closets in your house so do not kill the look, make it simple, low to the ground, open and airy.

Last but not least – do not overplay and do not forget about your components… Some wall units like low boards with the TV on top look nice in the catalog BUT in the real life if you try to set up a TV there, you will have lack of space and lots of cords to hide. So be careful when choosing a TV unit in your wall unit, make sure you know measurements of all your components you buy the wall unit for and try to visually hide everything into the TV unit. Sometimes a back panel works nice to hide cords under the panel. Sometimes TV units are made this way to hide all those ugly cords. So be careful – this is very important.

Modern sofas… or modern sectional sofas are the most commonly used pieces of living room furniture today. Here are some recommendations when choosing one: it is always better if you position the sofa and your chase lounge the way that they both face your TV (wall unit). I also like the idea of putting chase lounges on both sides of your modern sectional sofa. The result is: it will make a sitting place cozier…. The whole place feels more secure and separated from other areas that way, making it a space for easy relaxation, a living quarter inside a living quarter.

It is always your choice to choose between a modern leather sofa and a modern fabric sofa. I like fabric sofas myself. It is more comfortable for me and you have lots of different colors to play with but, once again, it is always your choice.

Now, let’s get to the modern coffee table choices. If your room is big or even huge, low profile tables in wenge finish would look very nice there. If you ask me, I would prefer arm tables. They save lots of space; they’re not heavy, they are convenient enough to put a newspaper or a cup of coffee on them when you need it. Or you can hide it when you are not using it. There is a wide selection of these kinds of tables these days in wenge, glass (almost all of then have adjustable height).

Do not use a rug, even if it has a modern print on it, use cow hides. Natural and / or faux will always work the right way on your floor accenting a modern look of your room. Also a few chairs or foot stools in matching colors could be used if there is a need to increase the number of seats.

Modern Dining or Dinette area… Wrong choice here could kill your entire job of creating your modern living room. Dinette table and chairs, even if you choose a modern ones, still looks heavy and attracts too much attention to itself, taking it all away from the rest of your beautifully created ensemble. To solve this problem and not to kill all previously done work, I would recommend selecting a console table, either in wenge finish or glass. One side of it usually gets permanently attached to the wall. The other side has nice modern chrome legs. These consoles are usually hard to find but they can be custom made easily (and mostly not expensive).

If you are a person that likes to do projects yourself, there are even options for you! In fact, one thing that is both fun and easy is by purchasing cheap office furniture that in disassemble (needs to be assembled). Not only will you get to put it together, but you will be able to choose which style or color you want it to be. The best thing is that you may even be able to pick it up from the store rather than paying shipping price (if any). Not only is that guaranteeing that your product is cheaper but you have the guarantee that it is what you want, new and not used.

Another great way to find cheap but good quality office furniture is by going to any type of seizure auctions (such as sheriff sales/foreclosures, estate auctions or government seizures). In fact, there are many auctions that are now being held online, as well.

Whenever Possible Inspect Your Furniture

One thing that many people do not do when getting furniture is inspect it. In fact, the most important time to inspect the furniture is before the purchase is made (such as at an auction); to prevent your selves from getting cheap or poorly made office furniture. In fact, many times office furniture is cheaply priced because there are physical flaws on it (chips, scratches or dents); however, in some cases the furniture is reduced in price because it was a demonstration model that people tested out.

In the end, if you want good quality furniture for the office you will want to spend some extra time looking rather than purchasing the first thing you see.
